Michael Benchimol brings expertise in the manufacture of nanomedicines as well as ultrasound physics and its application in medicine. He has presented his work at the National Cancer Institute and Acoustical Society of America meetings and his work was featured on the cover of Journal of Controlled Release. Dr. Benchimol holds a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Boston University and completed his Ph.D. and post-doc at UC San Diego where his dissertation focused on ultrasound responsive particles for cancer therapeutics.
Head of Preclinical Ultrasound
Christopher Barback brings expertise in in vivo tumor models in multiple species, with a specialization in focused ultrasound treatments. As a member of staff at the radiology department at UC San Diego, his research primarily employed ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging with a focus on diagnosis and treatment of cancer. Mr. Barback’s work bridged the gap between the creation of novel nanotechnologies and their initial testing studies in animals. Prior to his time in San Diego, Mr. Barback was the first scientist in the R&D lab at Hagelin Flavor Technologies. He has a B.S. in Neurobiology and Behavior from Cornell University.
Dr. Sadik Esener is a highly innovative investigator who develops and applies novel technologies for the advancement of cancer medicine. He served as the director and PI of the NCI funded NanoTumor Center, a Center of Cancer Nanotechnology of Excellence. He now runs a lab at the UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center which studies various approaches for using nanotechnology for cancer detection, monitoring, and treatment. Dr. Esener has had many experiences translating technologies developed at the university. He has founded more than 10 companies in the biotech and optics space including Nanogen, Optical Micro-Machines, Parallel Solutions, Genoptix, Call/Recall, Ziva, and Sonrgy. He serves on the Board of Trustees of Sabanci University. Dr. Esener received his B.S. in Electronic and Telecommunication Engineering from Istanbul Technical University, and M.S. from the University of Michigan. He completed his Ph.D. in Applied Physics and Electrical Engineering from UC San Diego.
